Dentistry
At Westport Veterinary Clinic in South Queensferry
By three years old, most dogs and cats have some dental disease. It hurts – but pets hide it well, because they carry on eating whether it hurts or not.
What we offer and what it costs
Prices include VAT and are for a typical case. If your pet needs more, we will tell you the cost before we start.

Dental assessment (initial examination of mouth, scale and polish)
A dental assessment is a proper examination of your pet’s mouth under anaesthetic, with a scale and polish. Dental disease is the most common thing we find in adult pets, and it is painful long before most owners notice anything wrong.

Castration
Castration is the surgical removal of the testicles, done under general anaesthetic. It prevents unwanted litters, removes the risk of testicular cancer, and settles some hormone-driven behaviour such as roaming and marking.

Spay (traditional/open)
A traditional spay removes the ovaries, and usually the uterus, through an incision in the abdomen under general anaesthetic. It prevents litters and seasons, and removes the risk of pyometra – a womb infection that is common, expensive and can be fatal.

Spay (laparoscopic/keyhole)
A keyhole spay removes the ovaries through two or three small incisions using a camera and specialised instruments, instead of one larger abdominal incision. Recovery is generally quicker and more comfortable. It is offered for dogs.

Signs worth booking for
- Bad breath.
- Chewing on one side, or dropping food.
- Pawing at the mouth, or shying away when you touch their face.
- Red or bleeding gums, or a visible brown build-up.
- Simply being quieter and grumpier than they used to be.
Owners very often tell us afterwards that their pet has come back to life.
Why it needs a general anaesthetic
A conscious pet will not let anyone examine the back teeth, the inner surfaces or below the gum line – which is exactly where the disease is. Anaesthetic-free dental cleaning polishes the visible outer surface and leaves the real problem untouched.
If teeth need to come out
We often cannot tell until your pet is asleep and we can probe and x-ray properly. Extractions and dental x-rays are charged separately, so we ring you during the procedure with what we have found and what it costs. Nothing extra goes ahead without your say-so.
Keeping it at bay
Daily brushing is by far the most effective thing, and our nurses will show you how to build up to it gradually. Dental diets and chews help, but they do not replace brushing.
Frequently asked questions
The things people ask us most about dentistry.
Dental assessment (initial examination of mouth, scale and polish)
It is a full examination of the mouth under general anaesthetic, with the teeth scaled and polished above and below the gum line. Most adult pets have dental disease by the age of three. It is painful, and pets hide it well -- they carry on eating because they have no choice.
The price for the assessment, scale and polish is published on our price list for cats, dogs and rabbits. Extractions and dental x-rays are charged separately because we cannot know what is needed until your pet is asleep -- we ring you with the cost before doing them.
Because a conscious pet will not allow the back teeth, the inner surfaces or below the gum line to be examined -- which is where the disease is. Anaesthetic-free dental cleaning only polishes the visible outer surface and leaves the actual problem untouched.
We often cannot tell until they are asleep and we can probe and x-ray properly. If teeth need removing we ring you during the procedure with what we have found and what it costs, and you decide.
Daily brushing is by far the most effective thing, and our nurses will show you how to build up to it gradually. Dental diets and chews help but do not replace brushing.
Castration
It is the surgical removal of the testicles under general anaesthetic. It prevents unwanted litters, removes the risk of testicular cancer, and reduces hormone-driven behaviour such as roaming, marking and fighting -- which in cats also means far fewer abscesses and injuries.
The price is published on our price list by species, and for dogs by weight band, since both the anaesthetic and the surgical time depend on size.
It depends on species, breed and expected adult size. For larger dogs there are good reasons to wait until they are more mature. Rather than give a blanket age, we would prefer to talk about your individual pet.
It reduces behaviour driven by testosterone -- roaming, marking, some male-to-male aggression. It does not change fear-based or learned behaviour, and occasionally makes anxiety worse. If behaviour is your main reason, speak to us first.
Cats are usually back to themselves within a day or two. Dogs need rest and lead-only walks for about a week, something to stop them licking the wound, and a post-operative check.
Spay (traditional/open)
It is the removal of the ovaries, and usually the uterus, through an incision in the abdomen under general anaesthetic. It prevents litters and seasons, removes the risk of pyometra -- a serious womb infection -- and, done early enough, substantially reduces the risk of mammary tumours.
The price is published on our price list by species, and by weight band for dogs. Keyhole spaying is published separately so you can compare the two.
Not during or just after a season. Beyond that it depends on species, breed and adult size -- for large-breed dogs there is a real trade-off to discuss. We would rather talk about your pet than give a blanket age.
It is a bacterial infection of the womb that typically develops in older unspayed females a few weeks after a season. It is common, it makes them very unwell, and it needs emergency surgery that costs considerably more than a planned spay. Spaying removes the risk entirely.
Most pets go home the same day. Expect about 10 to 14 days of rest and lead-only walks, a collar or body suit to stop her licking the wound, and a post-operative check with us.
Spay (laparoscopic/keyhole)
It removes the ovaries through two or three small incisions using a camera and specialised instruments, rather than through one larger abdominal incision. It achieves the same thing with less tissue trauma, and recovery is generally quicker and more comfortable.
More than a traditional spay, because of the equipment and training it requires. Both prices are published on our price list by weight band so you can compare them directly.
No. We offer keyhole spaying for dogs. For cats and rabbits a traditional spay is the appropriate operation, and it is published on our price list.
Keyhole spaying usually removes the ovaries and leaves the uterus. Without ovarian hormones, the common form of pyometra does not develop, and seasons and pregnancy are prevented. The vet will go through this with you before you decide.
Not always. Size, body shape and previous abdominal surgery can all affect it, and very occasionally we need to convert to a traditional approach during the operation. We will discuss that with you beforehand so there are no surprises.
