First consultation
A first consultation is a full appointment with one of our vets, for a pet we have not met before or for a problem that is new. We examine your pet from nose to tail, listen to what you have noticed at home, and agree with you what should happen next.

Nurse consultation
A nurse consultation is an appointment with one of our registered veterinary nurses. Nurses run the practical, hands-on side of care – weight checks, post-operative checks, nail and anal gland work, dressing changes and advice on getting medication into a difficult patient.

Animal health certificate
An animal health certificate is the document your pet needs to travel from Great Britain to the EU or Northern Ireland. It has to be issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel, and the groundwork – microchip and rabies vaccination – has to be done well before that.

Vaccinations primary course (including consultation)
A primary course is the first set of vaccinations a puppy, kitten or young rabbit needs, given as two or three injections a few weeks apart. The price includes the consultation, so the vet examines your pet properly at each visit.

A booster keeps your pet’s protection topped up after their primary course. It includes a full health check with the vet, which for a lot of pets is the one time a year someone examines them properly from nose to tail.

Vaccination for kennel cough (including consultation)
Kennel cough vaccination protects dogs against one of the main causes of the infectious cough that spreads wherever dogs mix. It is given as a liquid squirted into the nose rather than as an injection, and most kennels insist on it.
* Allowances, fair use and plan terms apply. See what each health plan covers.
Anything not listed here is quoted individually – please ask and we will give you an estimate. See our full price list.
Ring us straight away if your pet
- Is struggling to breathe, or breathing fast while resting.
- Has collapsed, cannot stand, or is having a fit.
- Is bleeding and it will not stop.
- Is trying to be sick or to toilet without anything coming – especially a large-breed dog with a swollen, hard tummy, or a male cat straining in the litter tray. Both are emergencies.
- Has eaten chocolate, grapes or raisins, xylitol, antifreeze, rat poison or human medication.
- Has been hit by a car or had any other significant accident, even if they look fine.
- Is a rabbit or small pet that has stopped eating or passing droppings. In small pets this becomes serious within hours.
- Is in obvious pain, or distressed and you cannot settle them.
Ring before you set off
We can tell you whether your pet needs to come in, what to do in the meantime, and we can be ready for you when you arrive. Those few minutes on the phone can matter. If you are travelling with an injured animal, keep them warm, quiet and contained.
Frequently asked questions
The things people ask us most about emergencies & out of hours.
First consultation
It is a full appointment with a vet, used either for a pet we have not seen before or for a problem that is new to us. It gives the vet time to examine your pet properly and to take a full history from you, which is how most diagnoses actually get made. If we have already seen your pet for the same problem, you usually need a repeat consultation instead.
The fee for a first consultation is published in full on our price list. It covers the appointment and the vet's advice. Any tests, medication or treatment that follows is charged separately, and we will tell you the cost before it goes ahead.
Allow a little longer than the booked time, especially if your pet is nervous or if there is a lot to talk through. If you think your pet needs more time than usual, say so when you book and we will try to give it to you.
We will explain what we recommend, what it involves and what it costs, and you decide. Nothing goes ahead without your say-so. Where it is practical we give you an estimate in writing.
Repeat consultation
It is a follow-up appointment for a problem we are already treating. Rechecks matter: they are how we find out whether treatment is working, catch side effects early, and avoid carrying on with something that is not helping.
Less than a first consultation. The exact fee is published on our price list.
If it is the same problem we have already seen your pet for, book a repeat consultation. If it is something new, book a first consultation. If you are not sure, ring us and we will work it out with you – it is better to book the right length of appointment than to run out of time.
Bring any medication your pet is currently on, in its packaging, and tell us honestly how much of it has actually gone in. Pets are good at not swallowing tablets, and it changes what we recommend.
Out-of-hours consultation
Anything you would not be comfortable leaving until morning. Breathing difficulty, collapse, fitting, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected poisoning, a road accident, straining to toilet without producing anything, a bloated tummy in a large-breed dog, or a small pet that has stopped eating. If you are not sure, ring. We would far rather talk you through something minor than have you wait on something serious.
More than a consultation during normal opening hours, because of the staff needed to provide emergency cover overnight and at weekends. The fee is published on our price list, and we will tell you what to expect when you ring.
Ring first, always. We can tell you whether your pet needs to be seen, give you first aid advice for the journey, and have everything ready before you arrive. Those few minutes on the phone can matter.
Tell us. We will explain the options honestly, including what can wait and what cannot. Please do not delay ringing because of cost -- a delay usually makes both the outcome and the bill worse.
Nurse consultation
It is an appointment with a registered veterinary nurse rather than a vet. Nurses handle the practical side of care -- weight checks, post-operative checks, dressings, nail clipping, microchipping and advice on medication and diet. It is often easier to book and costs less than a vet appointment.
Nurse appointments cost less than seeing a vet. The current fee is published on our price list, and some of our health plans include them or discount them.
No. Diagnosing a problem and prescribing medication must be done by a vet. If the nurse finds something during your appointment that needs a vet's attention, they will tell you and we will arrange for your pet to be seen.
Yes. Our nurses are registered veterinary nurses, which means they hold a recognised qualification, are on the RCVS register and are accountable for their professional standards in the same way our vets are.

Anal gland expression
Microchipping
Animal health certificate
It is the official document that replaced the EU pet passport for pets travelling from Great Britain. Without a valid certificate your pet will not be allowed into the EU or Northern Ireland. It confirms your pet's microchip number, rabies vaccination and, where required, tapeworm treatment.
The fee is published on our price list. If you are taking more than one pet on the same certificate there is a charge for each additional animal, which is also published. The rabies vaccination and any tapeworm treatment are charged separately.
The certificate itself must be issued within 10 days of you arriving in the EU, so that appointment is close to travel. But the rabies vaccination needs 21 days before you travel, and the microchip must already be in place before the vaccination. If your pet has never been vaccinated against rabies, allow at least a month.
Yes, up to five pets travelling together with you, as long as they all meet the requirements. There is an additional charge per extra animal.
EU pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel. A passport issued in an EU country or Northern Ireland may still be. If you are not sure what you are holding, bring it in and we will look at it with you.
Vaccinations primary course (including consultation)
It is the first set of vaccinations, given as two or three injections a few weeks apart, which builds your pet's immunity from scratch. It protects against diseases that are still circulating and that can kill -- parvovirus and distemper in dogs, cat flu and panleukopenia in cats, myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease in rabbits.
The price is published on our price list, separately for cats, dogs and rabbits, and it includes the consultation at each visit. Our health plans include vaccination where appropriate and usually work out cheaper over the year.
Not until a week or two after the final injection -- the vet will give you the exact date. Until then, keep them off ground that unvaccinated dogs use. You can still carry them out and about, and meeting healthy vaccinated animals is fine and genuinely important for their development.
Most pets are completely fine. Some are a bit quiet or sore at the injection site for a day. Anything more than that -- facial swelling, vomiting, breathing trouble, collapse -- is rare but needs us straight away, so ring us immediately.
Yes. Every vaccination appointment includes a full examination by the vet, and that is built into the published price.
Vaccinations booster (including consultation)
It tops up the immunity built by the primary course, which fades over time. It also comes with a full health check -- for most healthy adult pets, the main chance each year for a vet to spot something early.
The price is published on our price list and includes the consultation. If your pet is on one of our health plans that covers preventative care, boosters are included where appropriate.
No. Some components are given annually and others every three years. We will work out a schedule based on your pet's species, age, health and lifestyle rather than vaccinating for the sake of it.
Ring us. Depending on how overdue it is and which vaccine is involved, your pet may need to restart the primary course. We will tell you honestly which it is.
Usually yes, though what they need may differ. Some diseases can be carried in on clothes and shoes, and most catteries require up-to-date vaccination. We will talk it through with you.
Vaccination for kennel cough (including consultation)
It is a highly contagious infection of the airways that causes a harsh, honking cough which can last for weeks. It spreads wherever dogs mix -- kennels, daycare, classes, parks. Vaccination reduces the chance of your dog catching it and the severity if they do, and most boarding kennels require it.
The price is published on our price list and includes the consultation. It is included in our health plans for dogs where appropriate.
As a few drops squirted into the nose, not as an injection. It takes seconds and most dogs barely object.
At least two weeks before the stay -- most kennels require that, and protection takes a week or two to build. Check what your kennel asks for, as some want it done more recently than others.
Yes. This vaccination is for dogs. Cats and rabbits do not need it.
