Prescriptions & pharmacy
At Westport Veterinary Clinic in South Queensferry
You do not have to buy your pet’s medication from us. You can ask for a written prescription and take it anywhere registered to dispense it – and we will tell you our own price too, so you can compare properly.
What we offer and what it costs
Prices include VAT and are for a typical case. If your pet needs more, we will tell you the cost before we start.

Prescription fee
A prescription fee covers writing a prescription so you can buy your pet’s medication somewhere else, usually an online pharmacy. You are entitled to ask for one, and for some long-term medications it can save you money.

Prescription fee (repeat)
A repeat prescription fee covers re-issuing medication your pet is already established on. It still needs a vet to check the notes and confirm the medicine, dose and quantity remain right before it is signed.

Dispensing fee
A dispensing fee covers supplying medication directly from our pharmacy – checking the prescription, counting out and labelling the right quantity, and going through how to give it. It is charged when we supply the medicine rather than writing a prescription for elsewhere.

Medicine administration fee - injections under the skin or into the muscle
This is the fee for giving an injection under the skin or into the muscle – the administration itself, separate from the cost of the medicine. It covers the nurse or vet calculating the dose, giving it safely and checking your pet afterwards.

Prescription or dispensing – which is cheaper?
It depends on the quantity. For a short course or a small amount, dispensing here is usually cheaper once the prescription fee is taken into account. For long-term medication in larger quantities, a written prescription often saves money. Both prices are published, and if you ask us we will tell you honestly which way round it is for your pet.
Why there is a fee at all
Writing a prescription is a clinical act, not paperwork. The vet has to be satisfied the medicine, dose and quantity are right for your pet, with no interaction with anything else they are taking, and they carry the professional and legal responsibility for that.
Repeat medication
Ask for repeats before you run out, not after – some medications are dangerous to stop suddenly. Allow a couple of working days, longer if we have to order something in. We cannot keep repeating indefinitely without seeing your pet; for most long-term treatment that means a check every three to six months.
A tip worth knowing
If your pet needs several items, ask for them all in one go. Only the first is charged at the full rate – anything else written at the same time costs less.
Frequently asked questions
The things people ask us most about prescriptions & pharmacy.
Prescription fee
It is the charge for writing a prescription so you can buy medication elsewhere. It covers the vet's time and professional responsibility in deciding the medicine, dose and quantity are right for your pet -- not the cost of a piece of paper.
The fee is published in full on our price list, alongside the repeat prescription fee and our dispensing fee, so you can work out which option is cheaper for your pet.
No. You are entitled to ask for a written prescription and buy the medication anywhere registered to sell it. We will also tell you our own price so you can compare properly.
Not always. On a short course or a small quantity the fee often outweighs the saving. On long-term medication in larger quantities it usually does save money. Ask us and we will tell you honestly.
The vet has to be satisfied the medication is still right for your pet before prescribing it. For ongoing medication that usually means a check every three to six months, which also catches side effects and changes in the condition.
Prescription fee for additional items prescribed at the same time as another medication
It is the reduced charge for each extra item prescribed at the same time as another medication. The first item is charged at the standard prescription fee, and anything else written in the same sitting costs less.
It is published on our price list next to the standard prescription fee, so you can see exactly what two or three items together would come to.
Ask for everything in one go. If you request a second medication a week later it counts as a new prescription at the full fee. Ringing a few days before you run out, with a full list, is the cheapest way to do it.
Prescription fee (repeat)
It is a re-issue of medication your pet is already established on. The fee covers the vet reviewing the clinical record and confirming the medicine, dose and quantity are still appropriate -- it is a clinical decision each time, not an automatic reprint.
The repeat prescription fee is published on our price list, alongside the standard prescription fee and the dispensing fee.
Allow a couple of working days, and longer if we need to order the medication in. Please request it before your pet runs out -- some medications are dangerous to stop abruptly.
Because prescribing responsibly means knowing your pet's current condition. For most long-term medication that means a check every three to six months, sometimes with blood tests, to confirm the dose is still right and to catch side effects early.
Dispensing fee
It is the charge for supplying medication from our own pharmacy: checking it against the prescription and your pet's record, measuring and labelling the correct quantity, and explaining how to give it.
It is published on our price list, next to the prescription fees, so you can compare buying from us with taking a prescription elsewhere.
It depends. For short courses and small quantities, dispensing here is usually cheaper once the prescription fee is taken into account. For long-term medication in bulk, a prescription may work out better. Ask us and we will tell you which applies.
Tell us rather than giving up. There are often alternatives -- a liquid, a flavoured tablet, a different formulation or a long-acting injection -- and our nurses can show you techniques that work. Medication that does not go in is not treating anything.
Medicine administration fee - injections under the skin or into the muscle
It is the charge for giving an injection under the skin or into the muscle -- checking the dose against your pet's weight and record, giving it safely, watching for a reaction and disposing of the sharps. The medicine itself is charged separately.
The administration fee is published on our price list. The cost of the drug depends on which one and on your pet's size, and we will tell you that before giving it.
Sometimes they can. But injections work faster, the full dose definitely goes in, and some drugs only exist in injectable form or last for weeks that way. For a pet who fights tablets, an injection is often kinder.
For some long-term treatments, yes. Our nurses will teach you properly and will not send you home until you are confident. Many owners who were sure they could not do it end up managing it easily.
