Neutering

At Westport Veterinary Clinic in South Queensferry

Neutering prevents unwanted litters and removes some serious health risks later in life. It is also surgery under general anaesthetic, so it deserves a proper conversation first rather than a blanket rule.

What we offer and what it costs

Prices include VAT and are for a typical case. If your pet needs more, we will tell you the cost before we start.

Anything not listed here is quoted individually – please ask and we will give you an estimate. See our full price list.

What it changes

  • No unwanted litters, and for females no seasons.
  • Spaying removes the risk of pyometra, a womb infection that is common in older unspayed females and needs emergency surgery.
  • Spaying early enough substantially reduces the risk of mammary tumours.
  • Castration removes the risk of testicular cancer and usually reduces roaming, marking and fighting – which in cats means far fewer abscesses and injuries.
  • It does not fix fear-based or learned behaviour, and can occasionally make anxiety worse. If behaviour is your main reason, talk to us first.

When to do it

There is no single right age. It depends on species, breed and expected adult size, and for large-breed dogs there is a genuine trade-off worth discussing. We avoid operating during or just after a season. Rather than quote a number, we would prefer to talk about your pet.

Open or keyhole?

For dogs we offer both. Keyhole spaying uses two or three small incisions instead of one larger one, and recovery is generally quicker and more comfortable. It costs more. Both prices are published by weight band, so you can compare them directly and decide what is right for your dog and your budget.

What is included in the price

Before anything goes ahead you get a written estimate that says plainly, for each item, whether it is included: the pre-operative examination, a pre-anaesthetic blood test, intravenous fluids, pain relief during the procedure, pain relief to take home, post-operative check-ups, and a protective collar or body suit. If anything unexpected comes up during surgery, we ring you before going further.
