Pet Out-of-hours consultation

For Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Guinea pigs, Small Rodents (Hamsters, Rats, Gerbils, etc.), Ferrets · Consultation & preventative care

An out-of-hours consultation is an emergency appointment outside normal opening times – evenings, overnight, weekends and bank holidays. If you think your pet needs to be seen now, ring us. Do not wait to see how they are in the morning.

About Out-of-hours consultation in pets

Emergencies do not keep office hours. Our Westport24 service means there is always someone to ring, whatever time it is, and someone who can see your pet if they need seeing.

Ring us straight away if your pet

  • Is struggling to breathe, or breathing fast while resting.
  • Has collapsed, is unable to stand, or is having a fit.
  • Is bleeding and it will not stop.
  • Is trying to be sick or to toilet without anything coming – especially a large-breed dog with a swollen, hard tummy, or a male cat straining in the litter tray. Both are emergencies.
  • Has eaten something they should not have – chocolate, grapes or raisins, xylitol, antifreeze, rat poison, human medication.
  • Has been hit by a car, or had any other significant accident, even if they look fine.
  • Is a rabbit or other small pet that has stopped eating or passing droppings. In small pets this becomes serious within hours.
  • Is in obvious pain, or is distressed and you cannot settle them.

What to do

Ring first, before you set off. We can tell you whether your pet needs to come in, what to do in the meantime, and we can be ready for you when you arrive. If you are travelling with an injured animal, keep them warm, quiet and contained.

What it costs

Out-of-hours consultations cost more than an appointment during normal hours, because of the staffing involved. The fee is published on our price list like everything else, and we will be straight with you about costs on the phone. Please never put off ringing because you are worried about the bill – tell us, and we will talk about it.
