Pet Vaccinations primary course (including consultation)
For Dogs, Cats, Rabbits · Consultation & preventative care
A primary course is the first set of vaccinations a puppy, kitten or young rabbit needs, given as two or three injections a few weeks apart. The price includes the consultation, so the vet examines your pet properly at each visit.
About Vaccinations primary course (including consultation) in pets
Vaccination protects against diseases that are still out there and that are genuinely nasty – parvovirus, distemper, cat flu, myxomatosis. A primary course builds that protection from scratch, which is why it takes more than one visit.
How a primary course works
- Puppies usually start at 6 to 8 weeks, with a second injection 2 to 4 weeks later. Protection is not complete until a week or two after the final injection.
- Kittens usually start at around 9 weeks, with a second injection 3 weeks later.
- Rabbits can be vaccinated from 5 weeks against myxomatosis and both strains of rabbit haemorrhagic disease.
Timings vary with the vaccine used and your pet’s circumstances. The vet will give you the exact dates at the first appointment.
Each appointment includes a health check
The price covers the consultation as well as the vaccine. For a young animal this is often the most thorough examination they have had – heart, chest, teeth, eyes, joints, weight. It is a good moment to ask about neutering, diet, worming, insurance and anything else you are wondering about.
Before full protection
Keep puppies away from places unvaccinated dogs have been until the vet says they are covered. Socialising still matters though – carry them, and let them meet healthy, vaccinated dogs in a safe place. Ask us and we will tell you what is sensible.
What it costs
The price for a primary course is on our price list, shown separately for cats, dogs and rabbits. Our pet health plans include vaccination where it is appropriate, which usually works out cheaper than paying as you go.
