Pet Spay (laparoscopic/keyhole)
For Dogs · Surgeries & treatments
A keyhole spay removes the ovaries through two or three small incisions using a camera and specialised instruments, instead of one larger abdominal incision. Recovery is generally quicker and more comfortable. It is offered for dogs.
About Spay (laparoscopic/keyhole) in pets
Laparoscopic – keyhole – spaying does the same job as a traditional spay but through much smaller openings, with the surgeon working from a magnified camera view.
The advantages
- Small incisions instead of one larger one, so less tissue trauma.
- Generally less post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal.
- The ovarian blood vessels are sealed under direct magnified vision, which is particularly reassuring in deep-chested and larger breeds.
- A shorter period of restricted exercise for most dogs.
Things to weigh up
- It costs more than a traditional spay, because of the equipment and training involved.
- It usually removes the ovaries only, leaving the uterus. That still prevents seasons, pregnancy and the common form of pyometra.
- It is not right for every dog. Occasionally we need to convert to a traditional approach during surgery, and we will have explained that possibility beforehand.
- It is offered for dogs. For cats and rabbits, a traditional spay is the appropriate operation.
What happens on the day
Starved from the night before, pre-operative check, surgery, home the same day in most cases. Rest and lead-only walks still apply, usually for a shorter period than after a traditional spay. The vet will give you specific instructions for your dog.
What is included in the price
Before anything goes ahead you get a written estimate that says plainly, for each of the following, whether it is included in the quoted price or charged separately:
- The pre-operative examination on the day.
- A pre-anaesthetic blood test.
- Intravenous fluids during the procedure.
- Pain relief given during the procedure.
- Pain relief to take home afterwards.
- Post-operative check-up appointments.
- A protective collar or body suit to stop your pet interfering with the wound.
If anything unexpected comes up during the procedure, we ring you before going any further.
